Can a male become an Au Pair?

The Au Pair program is not just for ladies — males can become Au Pairs too. However, the application process for male Au Pairs may take a little longer. To speed things up, it helps to add good photos to your profile, provide references from previous childcare jobs, write detailed messages to Host Families, and stay active by sending many requests daily.

You can find more helpful tips in the article below!
Au Pair is not a gender restricted job, so it is possible for boys to find a place in a Host Family. The truth is that it can take much longer for a male Au Pair to be placed, but some families are looking exactly for an elder brother for the kids and they are willing to hire a male Au Pair.

As a male Au Pair you are free to register, create your profile and start contacting Host Families at AuPair.com. There are many families that prefer having a female Au Pair, but there are also families that are willing to give guys a chance. It is up to the Au Pair to do his best to persuade the families of his qualifications for the job.

Please, note that AuPair.com may not accept male applicants whose chances of finding a Host Family are limited by reasons beyond its control, or if you do not meet AuPair.com requirements stated in our Terms and Conditions

How to choose a suitable picture?
A picture is worth a thousand words! Your picture is the most important component of your profile at AuPair.com. Learn more

We recommend you to create a really attractive profile that will convince Host Families to choose you. It is very important to add pictures and provide references in childcare to prove, even to skeptical families, that you are suitable for the program.

If you are a Host Family and you are open to host either a male or female Au Pair, we recommend you to encourage boys to write to you as well so they consider you as a potential Host Family.

How can an Au Pair get a visa?
AuPair.com is an online matching agency, therefore this question is beyond our scope of responsibility. But we will do our best to help you nonetheless! Usually the best source of information is the embassy of the host country placed in the Au Pair’s homeland. Requirements vary depending on both the Au Pair’s nationality and the host country, but usually a letter of invitation from the Host Family and a signed contract are needed to start the visa application. Other documents may be different depending on each individual case, and in case of the US, assistance of a local full-service Au Pair agency is also necessary.

How long does it take to find a Host Family?
It depends on several factors. Create your profile and make it attractive for other users. Check that you meet the Au Pair requirements set by the Au Pair program. Be active and contact 20-30 Host Families per day. While contacting the Host Families, make also sure that you fulfil the family’s expectations. Be active, open minded and try to convince families that the time spent with you will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for their kids! Generally speaking, it takes from one week up to a few months to find a Host Family
What is the age limit of an Au Pair?
Requirements of Au Pair programs vary depending on different Host Countries, but usually the upper limit of age of an Au Pair is about 30. Please, check requirements of specific Host Countries here.

Still, if you can't fulfil those requirements, you can always consider a position of a live-in nanny or a senior caregiver, but mind that those are not cultural exchange programs and you would be a kind of an employee of your future match.
